As a child my grandmother and/or mother used to apply oil to our hair every week-usually on a Sunday. Unbeknown to me (and to them) this is an Ayurvedic practice that I suspect was passed on from generation to generation. I still oil a my hair and that of my of 4-year old son , but not as often as I would like too.
Treating your hair is a little luxury that can be experienced in the comfort of your home. Applying oil to hair not only nourishes the scalp but also improves lustre, shine and strength of the hair. In addition, oiling your hair has great benefits like increasing circulation and relaxing the mind.
Here’s how to do it:
- Warm the oil.
Place your oil bottle in a bowl of hot water or alternatively, place the amount of oil you will be using in a small bowl and place the bowl in a pot filled with water. Do not microwave the oil.
- Apply to your hair.
Part your hair along the centre and lightly apply the oil to the scalp along the parting. Do this in different sections around your head, rubbing the oil into your scalp making sure to avoid the oil from dripping.
- Time for a massage.
With medium or firm pressure, begin with making slow gentle, clockwise circles working the oil from the front to the back of the head. Then tilt your head forward and massage the back of the head and neck with your thumbs to release any tension.
Next take bunches of hair and twist in a clockwise direction and gently pull. This action will improve blood flow to the area.
You could cover your hair with a shower cap or old towel to create some heat and this will promote deeper absorption of the oil.
- Leave it in.
How long depends on you- 30 minutes or overnight (remember to protect your linens if you choose this option). Place an old towel on your pillowcase because oil will stain and can eventually ruin a any fabric.
- Wash out.
Apply your shampoo directly onto your oiled hair before adding water. Then wash as usual.
