Why does skin become dry?
Dry skin is often treated as a purely cosmetic concern, but persistent dryness can indicate that the skin’s protective barrier is no longer functioning optimally.
The outermost layer of the skin is called the stratum corneum. It is sometimes described using a “bricks and mortar” analogy:
- The flattened skin cells, called corneocytes, act as the bricks.
- The lipids surrounding those cells act as the mortar.
These lipids include ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. Together, they form an organised barrier that helps keep water inside the skin while limiting the entry of irritants and other external substances.1, 2
When this barrier becomes disrupted, water can escape from the skin more readily through a process known as transepidermal water loss, or TEWL.
The skin may then feel:
- Dry
- Tight
- Rough
- Flaky
- Less supple
- More sensitive or uncomfortable
Factors that can contribute to skin dryness and barrier disruption include:
- Cold, dry or windy weather
- Hot showers and baths
- Frequent washing
- Harsh soaps and cleansers
- Over-exfoliation
- Low-humidity or air-conditioned environments
- Age-related changes in the skin
- Skin conditions such as eczema
Addressing dry skin therefore requires more than temporarily wetting its surface. A well-designed moisturiser should help hydrate the skin, replenish or support surface lipids and reduce excessive moisture loss.
What is baobab oil?
Baobab oil is obtained from the seeds of the African baobab tree, Adansonia digitata.
The baobab is widely known as the “Tree of Life” because of its long lifespan, cultural significance and ability to survive in demanding environmental conditions.
The oil extracted from its seeds contains a mixture of saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Its principal fatty acids commonly include:
- Oleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid
- Linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid
- Palmitic acid
The precise proportions can vary according to the geographical origin of the seeds, environmental conditions and extraction method.3, 4
This fatty-acid composition gives baobab oil useful emollient properties, meaning that it can help soften the skin and improve the feel of rough, dry areas.
How may baobab oil help dry skin?
1. It helps soften rough, dry skin
Plant oils act primarily as emollients. They fill some of the spaces between dry, uneven surface cells, helping the skin feel smoother, softer and more flexible.
Because baobab oil contains oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids, it can contribute lipids to the surface of the skin and improve its overall condition.
This does not mean that the oil permanently replaces the skin’s own barrier lipids, but it can support a moisturising formulation and improve the sensory symptoms associated with dryness.
2. It may help reduce excessive moisture loss
Dry skin is not always caused simply by a lack of water. In many cases, the skin is losing water faster than it can retain it.
A small pilot study involving 20 adult women assessed the topical use of baobab seed oil and compared its moisturising effects with commonly used moisturising substances.
The researchers measured skin hydration and transepidermal water loss and found that baobab oil demonstrated moisturising, hydrating and occlusive properties.5
These findings suggest that baobab oil may help limit water loss from the skin. However, this was a small preliminary study, and more extensive clinical research is still needed.
3. It provides fatty acids relevant to skin-barrier function
Linoleic acid has an important relationship with normal skin-barrier formation and function. It contributes to lipid processes within the epidermis and is associated with the skin’s ability to regulate moisture loss.6
Baobab oil naturally contains linoleic acid, although its concentration varies between different baobab-growing regions and batches of oil.3
It is important not to interpret this as proof that baobab oil alone can repair every damaged skin barrier.
The effectiveness of a skincare product depends on the complete formulation, the concentration and quality of its ingredients, and the needs of the individual using it.
4. It can contribute to a comfortable skin feel
Very rich occlusive products can be effective for severe dryness, but some people find them too heavy for daily facial use.
When baobab oil is incorporated into a balanced emulsion, it can provide nourishment and softness without requiring the user to apply a thick layer of pure oil.
The final texture will depend on the complete formulation rather than on baobab oil alone.
5. It contains naturally occurring antioxidant compounds
Baobab seed oil contains naturally occurring compounds with antioxidant activity, including tocopherols and other minor constituents.
Laboratory analysis has also demonstrated antioxidant capacity in baobab seed oil.7
Antioxidants can help protect the oils within a formulation from oxidation and may contribute to the skin-conditioning properties of the finished product.
However, baobab oil should not be presented as a replacement for daily broad-spectrum sunscreen. Sun protection remains one of the most important steps for limiting ultraviolet-related skin damage.
Is baobab oil suitable for dry facial skin?
Baobab oil may be particularly helpful in facial products developed for:
- Dry skin
- Dehydrated-feeling skin
- Rough or tight-feeling skin
- Dull skin
- Mature skin
- Skin exposed to cold or dry weather
People with oily, combination or blemish-prone skin do not necessarily need to avoid baobab oil.
The way an oil performs on the skin depends on its concentration, the other ingredients in the formula, the final texture and the individual’s skin response.
A lightweight moisturiser containing baobab oil will behave differently from applying undiluted baobab oil directly to the face.
Is baobab oil suitable for sensitive skin?
Baobab oil is generally used as a skin-conditioning botanical oil, but no cosmetic ingredient can be guaranteed to suit every person.
People with sensitive or reactive skin should consider the complete ingredient list rather than judging the product by one botanical ingredient.
Fragrance, essential oils, preservatives, exfoliating acids and other active ingredients may influence how well a formula is tolerated.
Patch testing a new product before applying it widely is advisable, particularly for people with a history of cosmetic reactions.
Can baobab oil treat eczema?
Baobab oil may help moisturise dry skin and support a product designed to reduce moisture loss, but it should not be described as a treatment or cure for eczema.
Eczema is a complex inflammatory skin condition that can involve barrier dysfunction, immune activity, genetics and environmental triggers.
Anyone experiencing persistent itching, broken skin, weeping, pain, infection or a worsening rash should seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
A cosmetic moisturiser can form part of an eczema-conscious skincare routine, but it does not replace prescribed medical care.
Why formulation matters more than a single hero ingredient
One of the most common misconceptions in skincare is that adding a fashionable botanical extract automatically makes a product effective.
In practice, a moisturiser performs through the interaction of several ingredient categories:
- Humectants attract and bind water within the outer layers of the skin.
- Emollients soften the skin and improve the feel of rough surface cells.
- Occlusive ingredients form a protective layer that helps slow water evaporation.

What should you look for in a baobab moisturiser?
When choosing a facial moisturiser containing baobab oil, consider the following questions:
- Is baobab seed oil clearly identified in the ingredient list?
- Does the product contain complementary moisturising ingredients?
- Is the texture appropriate for your skin type and climate?
- Does the formula avoid ingredients that you already know irritate your skin?
- Does the brand explain the purpose of the ingredient without making unrealistic medical claims?

A product should not be chosen simply because baobab appears on the front label. The quality and balance of the entire formula matter.

Baobab oil or pure facial oil: which should you choose?
