The Best Natural Ingredients for Baby Eczema: Backed by Science

By Dr. Nirvana Pillay — Neuroscientist, Public Health Epidemiologist & Mom

When your baby has eczema, the ingredient list suddenly matters more than ever. Not all “natural” ingredients are automatically safe, but certain plant-based and physiologically compatible ingredients are strongly supportive of a healthy skin barrier.

Here are the top natural ingredients we look for in baby eczema formulations and why they work.

1. Vegetable Glycerine

Glycerine is a humectant,  it draws water into the outer layer of the skin and helps retain moisture. This is crucial in eczema, where the skin barrier loses water more quickly.

We use vegetable glycerine from plant sources in our formulations. You can read more in our Ingredients & Science Glossary.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has a long history of use in soothing irritated, red, and inflamed skin. It provides a gentle cooling effect and supports skin comfort during flare-ups.

3. Castor Oil

Castor oil is a unique plant oil with semi-occlusive properties. That means it helps “seal in” moisture without creating the same level of heat and occlusion that heavy petrochemical products can cause. For eczema-prone babies, this balance between protection and breathability is important.

4. Non-Nano Zinc Oxide

Non-nano zinc oxide sits on the surface of the skin and provides a soothing, protective layer. It is often used in nappy creams and barrier creams, and in our formulations it plays a calming role for sensitive, reactive skin.

5. Allantoin

Allantoin is known for its skin-soothing and skin-protecting properties. It supports skin repair, reduces feelings of discomfort, and is well tolerated by sensitive skin.

6. Shea Butter

Shea butter is a rich, nourishing butter that supports the lipid (oil) layer of the skin barrier. It helps soften rough, dry patches and is safe for daily use in most babies when part of a gentle, fragrance-free formula.

Ingredients We Avoid

Equally important is what we leave out. For eczema-prone skin, we avoid:

  • Mineral oil and liquid paraffin.
  • Fragrances.
  • Harsh surfactants.
  • Unnecessary dyes.
  • Parabens
  • Petrochemicals

You can explore both the ingredients we use and our “no” list in our full Ingredients & Science Glossary.

Final Thoughts

Natural ingredients are not automatically better, but when carefully chosen and combined based on evidence, they can be incredibly supportive for baby eczema. Gentle humectants, soothing botanicals, and breathable barrier ingredients work together to hydrate, protect, and comfort delicate skin.
