Reasons Why Babies Cry and How You Can Help

by Dr. Nirvana Pillay on Sep 05, 2024

Crying is your baby’s first form of communication. It’s how they tell you they’re hungry, uncomfortable, tired, or even in pain. As a parent, understanding the reasons behind those tears can help you respond more effectively and soothe your baby faster. Here are some common reasons why babies cry and tips to address them:

1. Hunger

When babies are hungry, they let you know through rhythmic and repetitive cries that are usually short and low-pitched. This is one of the most common reasons why newborns cry. The "feed me" cry can be quite distinctive, especially as you start recognising your baby’s hunger cues.
How to Help: Feed your baby on demand when they show signs of hunger, like rooting or sucking on their fingers. Regular feeding intervals can help prevent hunger cries.

2. Dirty Diaper

Some babies are quite content to sit in a dirty diaper for a while, while others find it unbearable for even a second. If your baby suddenly starts crying after a period of quiet, it could be because they need a diaper change.
How to Help: Check your baby’s diaper often and keep it clean and dry. A soothing diaper cream can help prevent diaper rash and further discomfort.

3. I Have to Burp!

If your baby starts crying soon after feeding, it might be because they need to burp. Babies can swallow air while feeding, which can lead to gas and discomfort.
How to Help: Gently burp your baby after each feeding by holding them upright and gently patting their back. This can release trapped air and ease discomfort.

4. Colic

Colic can be a stressful and mysterious condition. It’s defined as excessive crying in an otherwise healthy baby for more than three hours a day, three days a week, for three weeks in a row. While the cause of colic is not fully understood, it is often outgrown by the time the baby is 3-4 months old.
How to Help: Hold and comfort your baby as much as possible. Sometimes, gentle rocking, swaddling, or going for a walk in a stroller can help soothe a colicky baby. If you're concerned about your baby's crying, consult with your pediatrician.

5. Sleepiness

Sleep is a learned skill, and babies often need help learning how to self-soothe and fall asleep. When your baby is overtired, their crying can intensify.
How to Help: Establish a consistent bedtime routine to signal that it’s time to sleep. A calming routine might include a warm bath, a gentle massage, and a lullaby. Lay your baby down when they are drowsy but still awake to help them learn to fall asleep on their own.

6. Teething

Babies can start teething as early as 4-6 months, and the process can be uncomfortable. The gums become sore, and this discomfort often leads to increased crying.
How to Help: Gently massage your baby’s gums or offer a teething ring to help soothe the pain. You can also consult with your pediatrician about pain relief options if necessary.

7. Illness

When babies are sick, they often cry more than usual. You may notice other signs of illness, such as a fever, lethargy, or changes in feeding and sleeping patterns.
How to Help: If you suspect your baby is sick, consult with your pediatrician for proper diagnosis and treatment. Keep your baby comfortable and monitor their symptoms.

8. Need Attention

Babies crave attention and comfort from their caregivers. Sometimes, they simply want to be held, rocked, or talked to. Crying is their way of asking for this closeness.
How to Help: Hold your baby or put them in a baby carrier to keep them close. You can also use a baby swing or bouncer to provide gentle motion, which can be comforting.

Final Thoughts
Understanding why your baby is crying is key to calming them down. Each cry has its own reason, and as you grow more familiar with your baby, you’ll start recognizing the subtle differences. Whether it’s hunger, a need for a diaper change, or just a bit of comfort, responding to your baby’s cues can create a stronger bond and promote their emotional well-being.
